Using race as one factor in college admissions increases minority students' chances of getting into college, thus ensuring a diverse student body. In the case of Grutter v. Bollinger, the Supreme Court considered promoting racial and ethnic diversity in college campuses so important that it voted to uphold the University of Michigan's admissions policy, which considers a minority student's race a positive factor in the admissions process as long as the student's race is not the only defining factor. The Supreme Court understood that diversity promotes exposure to other races and cultures, which helps break down racial stereotypes and fosters tolerance and acceptance of others. In general, diversity on college campuses benefits society as a whole.
