Most people believe that it is cheaper
to execute dangerous criminals than to keep them in jail for years
at the expense of taxpayers. ______________________________. The reason
for this is that a convicted criminal is not executed right after
being sentenced to death. For example, in the state of Florida, it
takes an average of 11 years from the time a death sentence is imposed
to the time an inmate is actually executed. During this time, the
inmate can appeal his case to higher courts, in some cases even up
to the Supreme Court. Each stage of the appeal is handled by highly
paid defense attorneys and appellate judges, all of whom are paid
by taxpayers. In addition, death row inmates are held in high-security
prisons that cost more than ordinary prisons to maintain. In the end,
the expense of carrying out executions becomes many times more than
that of imprisoning a person for life. Dangerous criminals should
not be executed. They should be imprisoned for life because it is
a cheaper way of protecting society.
