_______________________________________________. Since many of them bring to prison a commitment to criminal subcultures, education can challenge their belief structure and provide alternate choices that are acceptable to society. In order to choose between positive and negative social norms, prisoners must first identify and understand them. Providing inmates with workshops that focus on such issues can help them understand proper social morality. This understanding gives them the ability to distinguish civilized from uncivilized behavior and responsible from irresponsible conduct. Similarly, active involvement in courses on peace, human rights, and non-violence can positively adjust a prisoner's view of himself and the world by promoting self-esteem, empathy, and solidarity, all of which are essential to achieving social competence. Such learning experiences help prisoners to change their way of thinking, give new meaning to their lives, and allow them to see themselves as part of the larger society.
