CATW Student Essay: Response Paragraph #1
I believe we need to ask ourselves how "green" our environmentally-conscious behavior really is. It gives me hope to see young people taking more of an interest in protecting the environment. For example, I have observed friends who buy bottled water to drink and then keep the empty bottle all day to recycle when they get home. Their desire to recycle is admirable, but my friends are not considering that buying bottled water in the first place harms the planet. A lot of energy and resources like oil are used to create plastic bottles and bring them to stores. Ultimately, many plastic bottles never get recycled and fill up space in landfills. Moreover, when I am at my job at Whole Foods, I wonder if the shoppers buying the organic fruits and vegetables really consider how far the items traveled to get to the store. In fact, in my high school Biology class, we discussed how organic food can contribute to global warming just as much as conventionally-grown food because large amounts of fuel are needed to transport both kinds of food around the country and the world. While organic food may be healthier for us as individuals, often it is not more beneficial for the planet as a whole.
