This passage was taken from The Texture of Dreams by Fasil Yitbarek, 2005.

Here she is, the woman who had once been to me no more than a cranky landlady with a mean streak. The woman whose insults, random aloofness and veiled threats of eviction had at times tempted me to terminate my tenancy with her. But it has been a while now since Mrs. Hanson has dropped for good that awful side of hers. In the last couple of years, she has become a friend whose company I have enjoyed and whose wise counsel I have counted on. What made her behave strangely for so long, I could only guess. Having gone through a difficult childhood, a failed first marriage, separation and estrangement from her children, perhaps she had used volatility as her protection against further heartbreaks. However, she had wielded it haphazardly with the incompetence of a mediocre impersonator. But through the years of our coexistence, it became impossible for her to keep up the act. We have spent a lot more time in close proximity to each other than to anyone else, and it was only a matter of time till we revealed our true faces.
