The 90 to 120 students enrolled in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes any given
semester at John Jay College represent the tip of an iceberg only. Non-native English speaking
(NNES) students are present in every classroom: some have passed the EAP course sequence;
others have never taken EAP or ESL classes at college. Their academic English proficiency
varies, and so does the degree of interference from their first language.
